Gardening and Coping with Allergies

How do you cope with allergies and have a garden? Depending on the severity of your allergies, gardening can be a very difficult situation. In this article, I will discuss how individuals with allergies can grow gardens just as easily as a person without allergies.

First of all, I have been in this situation. I started having asthma and allergy problems when I moved to the countryside at age ten. Growing a garden was difficult to do, but I managed to create one nonetheless.

How about wearing a mask? A simple white mask may help you to avoid breathing in some of the allergies, and they vary in price. Some of these masks cost ten dollars, some can cost forty dollars, and a few can be even more than that. You can find these white masks at many stores including Walmart, Target, Amazon.com; etc.

Another way to help prevent allergy attacks in the garden is to simply plant what you’re not allergic to. This is a very easy thing to do. Of course, you will need to visit a doctor to see what you’re allergic to. After this, it should be easy. Unless you’re allergic to everything, in which case you’ll need some medication.

Again, ask your doctor about the medication. Personally, I used an asthma inhaler and a white pill(can’t remember the name) to thwart my allergy symptoms. There are also nose sprays and eye drops that you can use to alleviate your allergies.

Something else you could try doing is not going out before ten in the morning. I’ve read that allergy symptoms are often greatest before ten o’clock. Another possibility is simply having an indoor garden if you’re worried about outside allergies. Of course, this may cause you to have allergies indoors if you’re allergic to what you plant.

What about the seasons? If your allergies are horrible in the spring, then why not try planting a garden in the fall? You can even plant in the winter months, in some locales. Certain types of plants will grow at different times of the year, and I’m sure you can find something to grow. Some examples of plants that can be grown in the winter months are Broccoli, Cabbage, and Brussel Sprouts.

Gardening and allergies do not have to go hand in hand. You can reduce your chances of having allergy problems if you just take some simple precautions. I hope this article helps you in your future gardening endeavors.
